ABOUT ALMAMATER
 

T.K.M College of Engineering, Kollam-5 is situated in the historic coastal city of Kollam. The college is located by the Kollam-Shenkotta road (N.H.208), just five kilometers away from the heart of the City. The city is well connected by Railways and Roads, and the Thiruvananthapuram Airport is only 70 kilometers away. This college is the major institution for technical education under the T.K.M college trust. The Trust runs several educational institutions, located in two different campuses, one ar Karicode, Kollam and the other at Karuvelil, Ezhukone. T.K.M college of Engineering is built in the Mughal architectural style, and is a distinctive landmark.

It has the unique distinction of being the first engineering college in the private sector in Kerala. The foundation stone of the college was laid in the year 1956 by Dr. Rajendra Prasad, The first President of Independent India. The college was formally inaugurated by Prof. Humayun Kabir, the then Minister for Scientific and Cultural Affairs, Govt. of India, on 3rd July, 1958.

In the beginning the college offered courses in Civil, Mechanical and Electrical branches of Engineering. Since then it made rapid strides, and has grown into one of the major technical institutions in India offering courses in seven branches of Engineering, and in Architecture at graduation level. The college also offers part-time degree courses in Civil, Mechanical and Electrical and Electronics Engineering. It offers post graduate degree courses, M.C.A, M.Tech (Civil), and M.Tech (Mechanical) and a part-time M.B.A programme. The college is an Approved Research Center for Mechanical and Civil Engineering. 660 students are admitted every year in various disciplines and of the administrative staff comes to about 400 in all. The college has been able to attract the best of brains from the state as a result of its brilliant track record. The college is affiliated to Kerala University and is approved by the All India Council for Technical Education, New Delhi.

The infrastructure facilities available in this institution are among the best in the sector. Each department has its own computer centre, and the departments are net-worked, and provided with Internet facility through BSNL leased line. The Internet facility is made available to the staff and the students free of cost.

The college has an excellent central library with over 50,000 books, around 100 technical journals, and periodicals. The library is open from 8.00 am to 8.00 p.m. on all working days and Saturdays. The library system is computerized, and has also Internet facility. Apart from the central library, each department has its own library with specialized collections.

Separate hostels are provided for boys and girls, and students of the first year are also provided separate accommodation. The students themselves manage the hostel mess.

A remarkable feature of the college is the Advisory System which ensures close contact between the staff, students and the parents. The whole system is supervised by one Chief Staff Co-ordinator. Each student comes under a staff advisor, who monitors and records his academic and non-academic activities.
The college has a common Auditorium and Seminar Halls. In addition, each department has its own seminar halls equipped with modern audio-visual presentation devices. The students take part regularly in N.S.S., N.A.S.A., I.E.E.E., I.S.T.E., S.S.A., I.I.Ch.A.,I.E(i), and College Union activities.

T.K.M College of Engineering Alumni Association was founded in 1963 by the students who passed out of this institution for maintaining close contacts with their alma mater. Now there are very active alumni chapters in various arts of the country and the world.

The college has a very effective Placement Cell. A large number of students are placed in well reputed companies every year through the cell.

The Career Guidance Cell of the college works in liaison with the Training and Placement cell. It imparts training to the students in order to help them perform creditable in competitive examinations, interviews and group discussions.

The College provides sports facilities like a Mini Football Court, a floodlit Basketball Court, a Tennis Court, a Multi-Gymnasium, a Volleyball court, a Shuttle Badminton court, A table Tennis Hall, A Hockey Practice Court and a concrete Cricket Pitch.

A Co-operative Society provides the students with books and stationery at subsidized rates. Banking, postal, telephone, and canteen facilities are available in the campus. Buses are provided for the transportation of day scholars at reasonable rates The campus has a large parking area, too, The service of a medical officer is available in the campus.

There are separate amenity centres for boys and girls.

T.K.M College of Engineering, Kollam, with new schemes and facilities added every year, has become an outstanding centre of excellence in the field of technical education. It is indeed a torch-bearer, marching ahead of many such institutions.
